  1. It shows the people's lack of guidance from their lack of faith She eblieved in God and that it's very important to have faith. It guided her to make the decisions that she made. She thought that if you did not have certain beliefs and would not make the right decisions. "In The Luife You Save May Be Your Own",they are not guided correctly, because the old lady is naive, and the man is not a good person. He is selfish and mean, and Flannery O'Connor thinks that if they had had beliefs and guidance, they would not have made the decisions that they made.

  2. Flannery O'Conner's life and beliefs are reflected in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" The father had the same illness in the story that Flannery O'Conner had that killed her. This relates in the way that the disease she faced was a part of her story. Also in the story, the daughter (Lucynell Crater) was the only child just like Flannery O'Conner.

Flannery O'Connor's Christian beliefs are reflected highly throughout all of her work and can definitely be seen in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". In this story, the characters are all lacking guidance, which leads them to making poor choices. This reflects O'Connor's belief in God as a savior because it is showing how people behave badly without the guidance of these people to save them from the terrors of society. Because these characters lack guidance, they end up being hurt by other people in the story. For example, the young Lucynell Crater is left by Mr. Shiftlet at the restaurant because neither of them had any sort of guidance. Mr. Shiftlet didn't have the guidance that he needed in order to know what the right decision was in that circumstance, so it ended with him leaving the woman that he had married. This is extremely discouraged in the Christian religion, because it is not a good thing to leave your wife to find others. Also, it is seen at the end when Mr. Shiftlet is talking to the boy that he picked up on the road. With this, he starts talking about how he left his mother that taught him everything that he knew about religion. When he left his mother, it is also seen as the first step of him leaving religion behind, which is what causes him to make such poor choices later on in life.

Mr. Shiftlet seems like a religious man because near the end he yells out "Oh Lord...Break forth and wash the slime from this Earth!" With this quote he declares his devotion to God and how he realizes the ugliness of this world. Flannery O'Connor's own life is reflected in this closer to the end because in the biography, it says that she seemed like she was rushing at the end of her life, and Mr. Shiftlet was in a hurry to get to Mobile, Alabama.

  5. Flannery O'Connor has many of her beliefs in her pieces of work like "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". The title of the story is the first reflection. She is a Christian and she might have believed that the most important thing you can do is save yourself by believing and having faith in God. She died young and had medical problems throughout her life, so maybe writing this story was a way for her to save herself and let it out. Another reflection is when she describes the young Lucynell Crater. She is told to be innocent and like a child, in the way God sees everyone in religion. Maybe having the car become fixed in her eyes shows that God can help solve any problem. In these ways Flannery O'Connor could express herself in her writing like she did in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own"

  6. Flannery O'Connor' life and beliefs are reflected in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". One example of her life being reflected in the story is the fact the story has a southern setting. Flannery O'Connor grew up in the south. Another example of her life being reflected in her writing was the fact that the characters had disabilities. She herself was suffering from Lupus and was losing the ability to walk.

  7. In "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" Flannery O'Connor does insert some of her own religous beliefs into the story. An example is the man. In the story he is something like the devil, helping out the old lady making himself seem like a great man when in reality all he wanted was the car. Also he kept saying things such as angel, gawd, and bible references. To conclude thses are a few of the biblical references I found she inserted into the story.

  8. Flannery O’Connor’s life and beliefs were reflected in “The Life You Save May Be Your Own.” in a couple of ways. First off, Mr. Shiftlet wanting a proper marriage and to treat his wife right like a Christian person should shows her beliefs. He felt uncomfortable just signing papers and wished he could be married in an actual church. Flannery O’Connor being a very Christian person and writer herself would have to agree with Mr. Shiftlet that a proper marriage in the presence of God would be necessary and that is why she reflected it in the character. Furthermore, O’Conner having a disease that killed her was shown a bit through Lucynell who was so deaf and therefore limited by it. Thus, Flannery O’Connor’s life and beliefs where expressed through the characters and their actions in the story.

  9. Flannery O’Connor’s life is reflected in “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” in several ways. One way that it is reflected is by the Southern setting. Flannery O’Connor grew up in the South and that is where the story is set. Flannery O’Connor incorporates her love of birds into the story as well. Religion was a big part of Flannery O’Connor’s life; she includes this part of her into the story a little bit. The characters seem to be religious from the way they speak of God. She also includes her disability in her story. The character Mr. Shiftlet has part of his arm missing. This makes it so that he can’t do everything he wishes to; the same way Flannery O’Connor’s lupus disabled her. She also incorporates the illness she has because her husband died of lupus as well. In these ways, Flannery O’Connor is able to have the story “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” reflect her own life and beliefs.

  10. Flannaery O'Conner was constidered the only orthodox Christian writer and here beliefs in the Lord and the Holy Spirit affected her stories and the way she wrote them. The man on "the only Christian writer" said that O'Conner saw grace in the land of the devil, and in the story "The Life You Save May Be Your Owm" she writes about a very sad, isolated family, without much hope, and O'Conner placed Mr.Shiftlet in the story (him being grace in the land of the devil) and he helps the family and eventually helps himself. She wrote about hope, and change in the light of God.

  11. After viewing the biography of Flannery O'Connor her life and beliefs are reflected in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." O'Connor potraded herself as the character Lucynell. Lucynell is at a disadvantage in the world because of her disabality. Flannery was at a disadvantage also, she had qualities like the mother in the story by being tough and a strong minded woman. Flannery believed in the Christain religion very highly. Mr.Shiftlet in the story is predenting to be a Christain person because the only life he is trying to save is his own. He leaves Lucynell in the diner alone not being able to communicate with others. The mother is selling off her daughter for a handy man around the house. O'Connor is trying to show us that the world is a very un Godly.

  12. Flannery O'Connor lived with her mother alone in the woods and she had a disability so this might have influenced her characters and setting of the story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". The Craters live in a little house and the girl has a disability because she is deaf. Also, Flannery O'Connor mainly wrote creepy and mysterious stories in her lifetime and "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" is a good example of this kind of story.

Flannery O'Connor is a very religious person. In her story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own",it tells of a man, Mr. Shiftlet, who travels everywhere because he had no place to go. He also did not want to be anywhere. When Mr. Shiftlet is on the road to Tuscaloosa, he stumbles across a boy who wanted a ride but did not say anything. Mr. Shiftlet tells him that he left his mother when he was young and he will never forget that day. Then the boy leaves, and Mr. Shiftlet says,"Oh Lord! Break forth and wash the slime from this earth!" Before this happens, Mr. Shiftlet did not believe in anything, and he was not happy with the laws that were in place. He says "It's the law that don't satisfy me." Connor would go to church all the time and was a very religious person from a young age. Flannery O'Connor shows her christian belief in this story, because she tells how a man is awakened to the mystery of the Lord.

  14. Flannery O'Connor's life and beliefs are reflected in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" because Flannery O'Connor was disabled just like Lucynell. This was cruel and since the girl was disabled she couldn't help herself and was stuck at the diner. The man was praying to god that he would wipe the slim off the earth during the storm when he wasn't even religious. He wanted god to be good to him even though he wasn't good to others.

  15. Flannery O'Connor's beliefs were expressed in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" through Shiftlet when she talks about how he wants to do the right thing as a Christian man should. Flannery O'Conor probably did this because she was a Christian writer, America's "only Christain writer". Also, she was disabled, as she couldn't walk. In "The Life You Save May Be Your Own", both Shiftlet and Lucynell are disabled as Shiftlet doesn't have an arm and Lucynell is deaf. After viewing Flannery O'Connor's biography, I can see how her life was incorporated in her story "The Life You May Save May Be Your Own".

  16. After viewing the biography of Flannery O'Connor i realized that this story has some similarities to "The Life You Save May Be Your Own". In the story Lucynell was disabled and struggled through life but she always stayed positive. In the biography Flannery was also disabled but even though she had a disability she didnt let that stop her from being a writer and following what she believed in. In the story Mr.Shiftlet was a very selfish man and only cared for himself and only "saved" his own life. In this story Mr.Shiftlet was always referring to the lord and praying to wash the slim off the earth when he was actually one of the slimy people. This relates back to Falnnery because she was the only Christian writer and she believed that even though these people had religion in thier lives they could be bad people and were very un-Godly.

  17. Her life and beleifs are shown becasue she believed in God and for her it's important to believe and to have faith. God was the reason for her actions and she lived for him. She was a person who was strict with others and God becasue she thought that if you did not believe then you would not make the good and right decisions. In the story, they make the wrong choices due to their beliefs. because Flannery O'Connor creates the old lady as a gullible, and the man as evil, rude and selfish.

  18. Flannery O'Connors catholic influence definately affected her when she was writing The Life You Save May Be Your Own. O'Connor believed that if Mr.Shiflet believed in god he would have not made the descisions he did in the story. The only reason he married the girl was that he could get the car and then dropped the girl at the diner. This showed he did not care about her and if he was religous he would have cared.

  19. In "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," Flannery O'Connor does insert a few of her religious beliefs. One view is Marriage. O'COnnor shows that she is religious by having Shiftlet marry Lucynell. One last belief is having them be christian. Mr Shiftlet is doing his Christian duty by helping out Lucynell with all of the chores. As you can see, Flannery O'Connor inserted some religious beliefs into "The Life You Save MayBe Own."

  20. Flannery O'Connors religious views and life stories were seen in "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." For example, Lucynell and Flannery were both disabled but had a positive attitude anyway. Also, in both they are religious. And finally they both have the belief that marriage must be in the presence of God for it to be true.

  21. In "The Life You Save May be Your Own," Flannery O'Connor sets the story in the gothic old house, that's big and creaky, and probably not in the best shape. When Mr. Shiftlet shows up, it's a little creepy, how he's just walking alone carrying a toolbox, and he only has one arm. Mr. Shiftlet seems all through the story to be depressed, and when he and Lucynell are driving to Mobile, the author even comes out and says it. Lucynell's condition also adds to the mystery. You don't quite know what will happen with her, but it adds to the dark setting, as well as the fact that they seem to be living in the middle of nowhere. Lucynell is one of those "off-kilter" characters.

  22. In "The Life You Save May be Your Own", Flannery O'Conners' beliefs are shown throughout the story. One example shown is her thoughts on marriage, and how she doesn't really think the legal papers are the most important. Shiftlet said that being able to pay for his new wife is more important. Also, in the beginning when we first meet him, he sort of gives the old lady reasons to not trust him. This may show how the author finds it hard to fully trust people in their own life. All in all Shiftlet wants to make the right decisions in his life, to be a "good christian".

  23. In "The Life You Save May be Your Own", O'Conners' life is reflected in many ways. One way it is reflected is in the setting. The southern setting of the story is similar to her life of a child, living on a farm. Another example is the man in the story. In the video, it said something about the devil, and in the story, the boy called the man a devil for saying what he did. O'Conners' life is reflected in this story many times.
