Let me tell you about my book...

Describe the subject of your self-selected non-fiction book.  Why did you chose the book?  What have you read thus far that intrigues you?

Once you post your comment, reply to a classmate's post by using the 'Reply' option at the end of the post, and suggest a monologue idea to them based on what they wrote.  Clearly, if you are one of the first to post, you will have to revisit the blog later allowing time for classmates to post.  You can reply to anyone who posts on this blog.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE SOME BOOK SELECTIONS THAT DO NOT MEET THE CRITERIA OF 'NON-FICTION.'  ANYONE WHO SELECTED SCIENCE FICTION OR "HISTORICAL FICTION" MUST SELECT ANOTHER BOOK ASAP!  See me with any questions you might have.

  1. My book is about the famous dog known as Rin-Tin-Tin who starred in many silent movies around the time between WWI and WWII. I chose this book one because it was one of the only non-fiction books I could find. Also Rin-Tin-Tin was a name I remember my parents saying when I was a five or four year old. So far throughout what I've read that intrigues me is the first Rin-Tin-Tin's story and how he became famous.

    1. This seems like a very interesting book. A good monologue for this book would be one of Rin-Tin Tin's trainers. They could give an insight on nwhether or not the dog was talented and what they felt about his status as a star.

    2. A trainer would be a great idea. Or a fan, another show dog...

  2. I chose a non-fiction book about the history of the Titanic. I chose this book because since the Titanic is such a well-known event in history it would be interesting to do a monologue based on it. So far I have read that the Titanic might have actually had a greater priority to save the first and second class passengers than the third class. This would be a good point to mention in my monologue if I was taking the perspective of a third class passenger.

    1. I think a monologue to do for this book would be from one of the workers on the book. Like a maid or a waiter. They could have insight on the first class, and I think it would be interesting to have something from their point of view, since people only mostly hear about the passenger's stories.

  3. The non fiction book that I chose was 'Open' by Andre Agassi. This book is an autobiography. 'Open' is about Andre Agassi's life on the road to being the Number 1 men's tennis player in the world. I chose this book because I am incredibly into tennis. I am always interested in what tennis players back in the 20th century and now do to become who they are today. His story was known to be very inspiring to younger generations. What I have read so far is that Andre was first taught by his horrible, controlling father. He would beat Andre, yell at him constantly, and pretty much torture him on the tennis court. I found this interesting since I was able to compare this to my training in tennis.

    1. What you could do is write it from the view of his coach, and how he sees Andre Agassi growing into the Number 1 tennis player.

    2. Don't forget, however, that the dramatic monologue will be spoken by someone who is actually fictional... so it would have to be an assistant Coach completely fabricated by Kaelyn.

  4. For my book, I chose to do an autobiography on Ellen DeGeneres. The book is called "Seriously...I'm Kidding." I wanted to read a book about Ellen because not only is she a funny person with a great personality, but she also has a very kind heart. She inspires others and actually has an amazing story. Ellen had to deal with a lot of hardships in her life but how she dealt with them is what makes her so fascinating. She never gave up and never quit. I think that is the reason why she is very inspiring and powerful to this day.

    1. I think that a really good monologue to do for this specific book would be to pose as a crazy fan. This way, the fan can describe how Ellen is influential and inspiring after everything she is gone through. Also, the fan could explain what her life is like.

  5. My book is about a man who is part of a special operation team called seal team six. This book so far is really good because it is so intense. Its about the team and how they go in to different countries and locations and it takes you through the tough times and it makes you feel like you were doing the mission with them. I chose this book because when I looked at the reviews, they said that it was a great book and it was very action packed. Things like this always interested me so I thought it would be a great choice.

    1. A good character for a monologue would be the general of the navy seals, and what he does to look over and operate special operations for these men.

  6. I chose a nonfiction book about South Central California. It follows the story of "Monster" Kody Crips. He wanted to become a gang member since he was a little kid. At the age 12 he was smoking dope, drinking alcohol, and killing other gang members. In order for him to get in, he had to an initiation This involved him taking out some gang members from the bloods, the crips enemy. Over the years he got the name "Monster" from his acts of evil. Eventually, while in prison for the whatever time, he meets Muhammad. Kody also got shot shot six times and didn't even stop. This book is memorizing and I recommend to anyone with a strong stomach.

    1. A great monologue related to your story would be for you to explain Crisps feelings about all if the bad things he has done. He would be able to reveal his feelings about all of the things he has done, and how he copes. Joshua Tyler

    2. Or you could have a victim of one of the crips speak from the grave!

  7. My book is called "Killing Lincoln" by Bill O'Reilly. I chose this book because I am very interested in the killing of Abraham Lincoln and with John Wilkes Booth. Bill O'Reilly is also a very good writer, so I thought this would be a great story. So far, I found most intriguing that JWB was actually obsessed with Abe Lincoln. JWB also was a past governor of Pennsylvania, who was very well respected. He attempted murdering Lincoln twice, too. At one of Lincoln's speeches, JWB brought a knife and tried stabbing Lincoln as he walked by, but someone saw the knife before he stabbed him, and he was stopped. The police let him go, however, because they knew who he was and didn't want to start problems by arresting a past governor. This proved to be a very bad mistake.

    1. I think you could make a really nice monologue if it was told from the perspective of one of the guards who let Booth kill Lincoln. You could make him seem really distraught because of how badly he messed up.

    2. I think a good idea for a monologue for this could be a soldier, Union or Confederate, and write about their reaction to the assassination.

  8. My book is called a "Child Called It". This book is about a boy who had a gerat, wondering life with a loving family untill his dad left and now he is left to live with his abusive, drunk mother. He is afraid to tell anyone of his situation for fear of them calling his mother. I chose this book because I thought that a really good dramatic monologue could be preformed from this book. Also, I have heard that this book is really interesting even though it is sad.

    1. For your book, you could possibly do a monologue on one of his friends. The reason I say you could be his friend is that a friend is usually really close and will notice the changes in the boy. He might've been a happy kid but then as his dad left he could have had a decrease in his personality.

  9. For my non-fiction book, I chose "Steve Jobs", by Walter Isaacson. This book tells about the life of Steve Jobs, from his adoption, his education, and finally how he came to found one of the most influential companies in the world today. I always found Steve Jobs to be interesting, as his personality and views are unconventional compared to most of today's CEO s. He also had a life full of turmoil and disappointments that most of the public have never heard about, including being adopted, having a child out of wedlock, drug use, and constant rejection.

  10. My book is called "The Gospel According to Coco Chanel". This story focuses on her life as a world renowned fashion icon. Also, it takes an inept look on her childhood which was filled with many hardships. I wanted to read this book because I was interested about her life. I wanted to know how and why she made an impact on fashion. After reading this book it amazed me how much she really overcame. As a young girl her mother died and her dad abandoned her and her siblings. She had to grow up in orphanage with her four siblings.

  11. My book is a biography about Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. It is a collection of his letters that he wrote home from the time he joined the 7th New York National Guard in the Civil War, to his death at Fort Wagner in July of 1863. He sends letters home to his mother, father, wife, cousins, and four sisters. He talks about his men and his experience in war. His regiment was the 54th Massachusetts, the first all-black regiment raised in the North during the Civil War. I picked this book because it has always been an interest of mine, and I thought it would be cool to read about his own thoughts, and what the experience of war was really like for him and his men.

  12. The book I chose is about the Salem With Trials. It's one of the only books that was truly what happened during the trials. The book it's self focuses on one of the victims of the hard life. Drucilla's story tells of what happened to many of the people in a small town in Salem, where not everything is as it should be.

  13. The book I chose was The Blind Side. It is about a boy named Micheal Oher, who was picked up off of the streets by a rich family, and had a rise to superstardom to play football for the Baltimore Ravens, which is why I chose this novel. It is an amazing story. The most interesting thing about this story is how Oher became a superstar from being picked up off of the streets.

    1. An idea for your monologue could be you could do it from a teammate’s perspective. If you used one of Oher's teammates from the Ravens and had them explain his life, what he went through, and how his life changed as a result of being "picked up off the streets". I believe that this would provide you with an interesting monologue about an interesting person.

  14. The book I read is called Accidentally on Purpose by Mary Pols. It is autobiography on her life and what she had to go through when her one-night stand ended in an unplanned parenthood. In the beginning of the book Mary is single and is trying to find someone that would be a good match for her although none seem to fit the part. After leaving a party and going to visit her friend Liza, the women go to a bar and meet a guy. Mary ends up hooking up with the guy and so far that is all the information I have

    1. You could do a monologue in the point of view of one of this girl's friends. It could be interesting so see their point of view on how they also had no idea that a this one-night stand that her friend had could possibly end up with her being a parent.

  15. The book I chose was a biography on Rosa Parks. I had a very hard time choosing a book and when I found this book I thought it would be very interesting to read. Since I found my book last minute, I'm not very far into it. However, I was intrigued by how it mentions that Rosa Parks had no true friends in school, and that she was extreamly shy. I find this interesting considering that she is known for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man which started a boycott against public transportation for over a year.

    1. For your monologue you could do it from the point of view of one of Rosa's close family members, her husband or one of the riders on the bus. I think would be a good idea so you could get the point of view of what great accomplishments she made.

  16. I chose the book the Diary of a Young Girl: Anne Frank. It's the very well-known story of Anne, a young girl that hides with her mother, father, sister, the van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. It is a collection of her diary entries as they hide in the annex. There are even parts where she had gone back when she was older and made notes on the passages. I was a little apprehensive to read this book, even though I picked it because I thought it would be interesting, because a lot of people had said it was very creepy. What intrigues me the most is how much Anne has matured as the diary goes on. At first, she was very happy and carefree, but now she has grown up and is now extremely mature for her age.

I chose this book because I’m also a gymnast and want to know more about her life, because Shawn Johnson is my favorite gymnast. 19. My book is called, "The Last Lecture." it's about a professer who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He only hasnsix more months to live. His wife wants him to spend time with her, and their children, but he is given a chance to give one last lecture. Randy siad that most people in his shoes would give a lecture about death, but instead he gives a lecture about persuing childhood dreams. This book really interested me with it's title and summary. I also enjoyed the little cartoon rocketship on the cover. It interests me that Randy continues to have such a powerful, positive outlook on life, expecialy what's coming to him. This book has really made me think of trying to persue my childhood dreams jus like him.

    1. Bryanna, your book sounds both sad and interesting. I think it would be really cool if you did your monologue as one of the students that was there during Randy's last lecture. That way you could talk about his life and show how much of an influence and positive outlook he had on living, even when he was dying.

  20. The book I chose is a memoir called Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs. Although I am not too far into the book yet, so far it is about a little boy who is the only child and deals with his poem writing mom and alcoholic father constantly arguing. Their fighting got so intense and abusive that they had to star seeing a doctor which ironically only made their arguing worse. This story seems very interesting because the little boy in the story is the author himself and the story of his life sounds intriguing.

  21. The subject of the nonfiction book that I have chosen to read is Dolly Parton. The book itself is called “Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business” in which it is an autobiography by Dolly. The reason I chose this book is because while I was looking for a nonfiction book I found out that my parents have a lot of interesting autobiographies and Dolly Parton stood out as someone I would wish to read about for I know a bit about her background as a famous country singer. So far, her early life has been the most intriguing. I would have never guessed that someone with such fame and fortune grew up in a very poor household, with eleven other siblings. The different stories of her life on the farm are funny and shocking to see how drastically different and primitive her lifestyle seems to people like us in a suburban community. They did not have running water or a bath tub for most of her childhood. I also enjoy reading about how she always longed to go beyond the mountainous area she lived in to become a singer in which she would travel and live in a car with her uncle whenever they went to a city.

  22. My book is about Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who is forced into hiding with her family during WWI. She lives in the upstairs of an office her father used to work at in the secret annex. I chose this book because I thought it would be interesting to read her diary of what she went through living in the annex for so long. Also, I could act as a character in the annex with her for my monologue. So far in my reading, I am intrigued with the ways the people living in the annex entertain themselves and find ways to make the best of their situation. It's interesting to see how they cope without being able to go outside or do things they used to before going into hiding.

  23. The book I have chosen is "Marley and Me," an autobiography written by John Grogan. This book is about Grogan and the thirteen years he had his dog, Marley. The book shows all of the adventures that Grogan and his family had with their dog. Marley is an uncontrollable, big, hungry, Labrador that is always causing problems. Marley's troublesome behavior and situations the family gets themselves into with him form a hilarious, but heart-wrenching book. I chose this story because it is a classic book that Iv'e always wanted to read, but never got around to it. From the pages I've read so far, the situations that Marley seems to get into intrigues me very much. Joshua Tyler

I chose the book "Heaven is for Real" by Todd Burpo. It is the true story of how Todd Burpo's son, Colton, has a near death experience and comes back alive. While he is having his short 1 hour visit to heaven, he sees angels and Jesus. Colton was sitting in Jesus' lap during his trip, and he was scared that he would die. Jesus tells Colton not to be afraid though, and the angels sing to him. I chose this book because it relates directly to my religion and I wanted to read this book before as well. I've heard from many people that this book was good and I wanted to see so for myself. What I have read thus far that intrigues me, is that Colton's parents find out about his journey a year after it happens. When Colton told his parents, they were shocked.
