THE FIVE PARTS OF OUR SHORT STORIES

    The Interlopers
    The point of view is third person. The setting is the woods in the Eastern Spurs of the Carpathians. The characters are Georg Znaeym and Ulrich von Gradwitz. The basic plot is how two enemies get trapped under a tree, forcing them into friendship before their death by wolf. The theme is that differences can be overcome through friendship.

  2. The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
    POV- 3rd person
    Setting- Small town, population of about 300. Rural
    Characters- Mr. Summers, the Hutchinsons, and the rest of the townspeople.
    Plot- These characters are gathering in town square for the annual lottery. All the heads of the families take a ticket. If there is a black dot in the ticket, one member of the family will get stoned by the rest of the community.
    Theme- People follow traditions no matter what the cost is.

    The point of view of At the Barbers is third person omniscient. The setting is in a barber shop. The characters are Makar Kuzmitch Blyostken and Erast Ivanitch Yagodov.
    The plot of this story is that Makar has given Erast free haircuts for a long time. He is in the middle of giving Erast a free haircut when he finds out that Erast has betrothed the love of Makar’s life (Erast’s daughter) to someone else. After finding this out, Makar makes Erast leave and forces him to pay for the haircuts from then on.
    The theme of this story is anger can control a person. The anger Makar feels for Erast changes Makar’s mind to make the decision not to give Erast free haircuts anymore.
