Because I could not stop for Death

by Emily Dickinson

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –

Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –

  1. Death nears closer and closer every day
It is a hard thing to accept
Most people wish they could do or say more
    Death is a difficult concept

Death is constantly on people’s minds
They wonder when they will take their last breath
Will they be brave enough to stare into the face of death?
    Death is a difficult concept

  2. Death stops for no one.
It doesn’t matter who you are.
It doesn’t matter what you’ve accomplished.
You’re time will come one day.

Accept the fact that it can’t be stopped.
    You fight it, you lose.
If you accept it, peace will come your way.
You’ve only got one life to live so make it worthwhile.

The Light That Was Too Dark
An empty house with an empty room,
With a lamp that seemed too bright.
But in this dismal room so quiet,
    The lamp turned into night.

The walls were shadows from this light,
    The pictures hung too still.
Their faces peered from their canvas,
The paint seemed ready to spill.

And loneliness was what this light portrayed,
For no one else was around.
The silence was ever so ghostly,
That you were aware of every sound.

I sat by this lamp that deemed so queer
The lamp was but a spark.
But its purpose in the room proved wrong,
For it was the light that was too dark.

  4. Although death may be ever eminent
Immortality can be achieved in many ways
It all matters what you choose to implement
After your death you could live only a few days

Although your presence may not resonate
Immortality can come through great deeds
Like the man who lived on for many years
    Because of his magnificent deeds

  5. A poem by Dickinson,
    telling the story of life.
    From the beginning with school
To the end with the sunset.

    The theme of her poem,
Is that all life must end.
    No matter who you are
    Or what you've done.

    With a grave tone beheld
    and a message shone
    Mrs. Dickinson show,
that there is no stopping death.

  6. The speaker has already died because the poet says immortality. The speaker is riding on a carriage with death. On the way to the lady's grave, we pass children and other people. Eventually death brings the lady to her grave and that's how the poem ends.

  7. There is no way to stop death
Everyone and everything knows that they will die
    The time will soon come,
For you, for me, for all.

Is it possible to live forever?
    Maybe in the after life
You have to choose the right path though
There's no way to run away, it's there forever.

There are people okay with that fact
    And you should be too
Because death is in all of us,
For you and for me too.

  8. Death happens to everyone.
Everyday someone has to go through with it.
There is no way to stop it,
    No way to control it.
    It just happens.
The theme of both these poems is death. They both talk about how it happens to everyone and how it can happen at any time.

  9. Death is unstoppable.
From the day you are born death is definite.
In life the only thing you can be assured is death.
    So why fear death?
    It is not a possibility.
    It is a guarantee.
Nothing can be done to change it.
So why fear it if you prepare for it.
    Enjoy every day you have.
    Before it’s over. Forever.
So once it’s over you can look admirably at what you have done.

  10. Death slowly takes my hand
As though it was all planned
    But I am not afraid
For I know death is my aid

Life beyond this world is where I want to be
And I know soon you will agree
That death is not the end
Which you will see if you look ahead

There is no reason to hurry
    Or even to worry
Death knows where he is going
    Only if you are forgoing

So go, and you will see
    You will be free
For death is not the end,
There is a whole other life ahead

  11. There comes a day
    That is like no other.
No matter how hard you try,
    There is no avoiding it.

It comes for all of us,
    At different times.
The only way to get by
    Is to accept it.

    Do not fear,
    For it is not scary.
    Do not cry,
For it is not the end.

    Do not be scared,
For this is just the way it goes.
    Immortality is key
Because death is not the end.

  12. Death awaits you at every corner.
Quietly, solemnly, no way to avoid it.
Slowly corrupting you, with relentless thoughts of when it will happen.
    No way to stop it.
It happens to everyone, and it will happen to you.

  13. Death is not going for anyone.
It passes through like wind, and leaves like fire.
It does not matter how you live your life, and the bad things you do.
    Death will eventually find you.

    Death comes for everyone
He doesn't care what you think
    Anywhere you are from
Death can arrive in a blink

Even the ones who always grin
Even those who try to run
You'll still meet him, his name's Grim
So don't try and act dumb

    Where does death bring you?
    Some think they know
If you want to know what's true
    Just follow the black crow

  15. For all who live,
there is something at the end.
    That thing is death,
    for me, you and friend's.

    It may seem harsh,
    and it definetly is bad.
It happens to the good and the bad,
even though it may be sad.

Some may want to go on
    and live for eternity.
But, it is bound to happen
    for you and me.

There is no way to stop it,
    it could happen anytime, anywhere.
    But it must happen,
    even if it's not fair.

  16. The Watch

I awoke one morning earlier than most
For I had received a chill.
Before me sat a grave man
    Dark only in his appearance.

I rose from my stupor, to implore his purpose
    And approached him wearily
When I noticed in his hand a small gold watch
    Chirping its quiet metronome.

The hand on its face had not yet struck eight,
Though its ticks became quite intense.
And just as I had readied myself,
    The hands ticked past nine.

I went about my day in an ordinary way,
And the clock kept pace with me.
    The hours slipped away
    As did my energy.
I returned to my abode at dusk.
    The watch still ticked away.
An air of fatigue came over me
As the watch struck eight o’clock.

    I slipped into my bed
    Feeling an emptiness within.
    The golden watch struck midnight
And the figure took my hand.

  17. Death waits for no one.
When it's your time, it's all over.
If you aren't ready to go,
Death will do it for you.

But when the sun finally sets,
And the day is all but done,
Death will whisper at your neck,
You will know your time has come.

    It may seem scared thinking,
"What will be of me now?"
There is a future for you.
Though you may not know how.

  18. Death is for no one,
    It may seem sad,
Even if it makes you mad,

    It happens to everyone,
    It will be okay,
    You could die any day,

    Wishing to stop,
    Is a false way,
    To go about your everyday,

    Before our death,
    Crying in pain,
    Even in the pouring rain

Death comes in the night and day,
He doesn't care if you can see him
He doesn't care who you are or what you are
In the end Death comes for you in the night and day

He comes for the sick and the wounded
He comes for women children and men
He comes for all even the animals of the world
Death is silent but shows redemption for our suffering

He kindly stopped for me and my family
It took time for him to visit.
One by one he took us across our life to our final resting place
In the end Death comes for you in the night and day

As he shows our life in this world
We remember memories that make us happy or sad
The life we lived reminds us even in death of who we are
Death is silent but shows us redemption for our suffering

When we die we wait for him to come
It may take time yes but it is a release,
He doesn't wait for us we wait for him
In the end death comes for you in the night and day

We will all meet him in the end
Life and Death or two inevitable things to avoid
Death is silent but shows us redemption for our suffering
In the end Death comes for you in the night and day

  20. When life has run away from you,
death will take a step closer.
There's no need to refrain or fret,
for you can only accept the ride.
It'll take you on a journey, down a long road,
that is both rocky and smooth.
No worries of time or place pass over you,
as the ride is all that matters.

  21. Death can not be stopped,
    It waits for no one,
    And it knew no haste.
    The school was passed,
    Then the field,
    Then the setting sun.
    As the days pass,
Death isn’t something everyone wonders about.
    Everyone has an end,
    But when is theirs?
    Death comes for everyone.

  22. Most of reality is real to only those who accept it
There are those who hide and run from fate
scared of what might become of them
Some are scared to see the light

They may hide from the light and shield their eyes,
run they might and seek shelter
but in the absence of light there is darkness
a darkness that we are not able to escape

in form of shade or cloud it seeks us
some may deny it, try to avoid it
it scares us, frightens us yet it is a part of life
life that we cling so desperately to

I do not shy from the darkness
I wait for it to approach on me
For every day has its dusk
'Tis the only truth of reality

  23. Death is coming for everyone
It is as simple as that
    He will not disappear
With the tip of a hat

    So do not pull away
There is no where to hide
    You can not prevent
    What fate has supplied

  24. The countdown starts the day you are born.
No matter what kind of person you are, good or bad, you will eventually be taken.
Many prefer to ignore this fact and avoid reminders,
Though a few do accept the idea.
Death shouldn’t be viewed just as the end,
    But as an inevitable change.
So don’t even think about running because no one is immortal.
You just have to deal with the facts,
    Even if you are frightened.

  25. It cannot be avoided
The coming of your own demise
    It comes for us all
Pinching out the flames in our souls; in our eyes

    Slowly or frighteningly sudden
    Your time will come too
    Very late or too soon
It takes us all; it will also take you

But do not let it come too soon
    For everyone deserves their time
Fight to live long and happily
For life is one high mountain that we all struggle to climb

So do not let anyone or anything
    Cut your journey short
Fight long and hard to reach that mountain's peak
For all life eventually will darkness thwart
