Words of Wisdom

It is one of those things parents and adults do so well:  offering words of wisdom.  What are the most memorable words of wisdow -- words that you try to live by -- that you have ever received?

Now, review the first three chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird.  What words of wisdom have you found in those pages?  Are they still relevant today?

Due on or before 7 a.m. Sept. 20.

  1. My parents always give me words of wisdom. The most memorable words of wisdom that they have ever given me are related to hard work and effort. They always tell me to give 100% in anything I do whether it be sports or school work. This is something that they say to to me, but they also lead by example. My parents have worked very hard to achieve success in their respective careers. No matter how hard a task is, my parents always point me in the right direction and tell me to give 100% and that hard work and effort pay off in the long run.

  2. The words of wisdom that I found reading today was when Scout's father Atticus said to her " you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." These words of wisdom are still relevant today because we don't know on how hard a person's life is or how they see something in a way that you do not. You should always try to put yourself in the quote on quote " skin or shoes" of the person because there perspective or way of life could be different than yours opinion. Also not everyone is going to know about every ones situation in life just as Scout's teacher did.

  3. My parents have always told me two things to live by that I have found have led me to be the person that I am today. They have always told me to do the best that I can achieve, and to aim for success. In To Kill a Mockingbird, I found that the words of wisdom that are said are you never know what one has to go through until you have gone through it for yourself.

    1. My parents give me the same advice, Taylor. It's important to alway put in your best effort into what you wish to accomplish. I also agree with the piece of advice you found from To Kill a Mockingbird.

  4. The words of wisdom that I found reading was when Scout's father, Atticus said " you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." These words of wisdom are still relevant today because everyone judges everyone. No one ever seems to consider what other people are going through and compare them to everyone else in the world. You never know a person's life until you are living it

    1. My parents always give the words of wisdom to tell the truth. They always say it is easier to fall asleep at night knowing that you dont have any guilt on your mind. What they tell me is true, knowing that you have to keep knowing your own story when you lie is hard to live with.

  5. Words of wisdom that I found in the first three chapters of "To Kill a Mockingbird" were that you never know what someone has been through or is going through. You can't understand their situation unless you are going through or have gone through it yourself. Even though this was written in the 1960's, the idea is still very true today. The point Atticus was trying to make when he said, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view; until you crawl into his skin and walk around in it," was that you can't judge people from the outside. Things in someone else's life may be much harder than you interpret them to be.

  6. Some words of wisdom I have learned after reading the first three chapters of " To Kill a Mockingbird" are when Atticus explains to Scout that she had learned things today, and so had Miss.Caroline. Scout realizes that if she put herself in Miss Caroline's shoes, she would see that she had made a true mistake. In turn, both Scout and Miss.Caroline can't be held responsible for not knowing any better and committing the honest mistakes they had. This is relevant to today, because just like Scout people in the world are able to get over their mistakes and in turn learn from them.

  7. I also agree with Maya. I believe that in the book "To Kill A Mocking Bird" there were some very important words of wisdom given. The one quote that caught my eye was when Atticus said to Scout "you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." I believe that Atticus is right because this is a very important piece of advice for anyone. You shouldn't judge someone, especially if you don't know what they"re going through. Many people go through hard things each day that many of us may not understand.

  8. The words of wisdom I found in the first three chapters of "To Kill a Mockingbird" were: " you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This quote explains how people should always try their best to see a person's situation through the person's eyes, instead of their own. It's a hard thing to do. It's like when you see a homeless person or someone living in a bad part of town, in a 2 room apartment. A lot of people thin that they're deadbeats, criminals, lazy people who couldn't finish school. They could have been very well off at one time, but things too a turn for the worse.

  9. The words of wisdom my parents give me are to always do my best and to treat others the way I want to be treated. The words of wisdom from this book are to be honest and people will like you for who you are. When Gem found out Walter did not have any lunch he invited him to their house to eat lunch. The Finch family made him feel welcome.

Your parents are right, and apparently, you follow their advice: you have followed the directions well. You've told us the words of wisdom you try to live by, and you've followed up with evidence from Mockingbird. Good work!

  10. My parents are always giving me advice, by the piece of advice they constantly repeat to me is that I should do my best at all times. I always put my best effort into everything I do and it is because of their advice. Their advice has gotten me far in life. My best effort has helped me to achieve many things and it has made me a better person than I would have been without it.
In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus tells his daughter, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—“ This piece of advice is one that everyone should live by. Nobody can truly know enough about someone in order to judge them. This piece of advice is relevant today because people still judge each other, unfortunately. If everyone followed this piece of advice clearly stated by Atticus, our world would be a much better place to live in.

  11. There were multiple pieces of wisdom that I found while reading the first three chapters of "To Kill A Mockingbird". Even so, the best advice I got from the chapters was to not judge a book by its cover. For instance, you should'nt judge someone because you don't know what that person has been through. Unless you've gone through the event yourself, you can't possibly know what it feels like to have that occurance in your life. Although the book was written in a different time period, its knowledge is still relevent in the modern world. For example, everyone is always judging people. No matter how many people get hurt by it, it seems that no one ever listens or are ever considerate toward one's situation. Not many understand the difficult events a person has come to, however, hopefully we will all come to our senses one day and finally realize that someone's life can be harder than you interpet.

  12. Throughout the first three chapters of "How To Kill a Mockingbird", there were many words of wisdom mentioned. However, the one that stood out to me the most was when Atticus said to Scout " you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This basically means that you never really know what someones life is like unless you are living it. You should always be considerate with your words because they can be very hurtful if you're not careful, and they will be even more hurtful if the person is going through a rough time. This is definitely still relevant because it is also the advice my parents give me. They say to be kind to everyone, and if you know someone is having a bad day, even just a smile or complement could make it better.

  13. Throughout my life my parents have given me several “words of wisdom.” One really important piece of advice they continuously give me is to never judge a person without getting to know them. They tell me if I do that I might miss out on life. Therefore the advice Atticus gave his son is still valid today. For example, when Scout’s father stated, “You never really understand a person until you consider thing from their point of view.” This piece of advice is still important today and has been throughout the course of history.

  14. The most memorable words of widsom that I have recieved from parents and adults are to treat others as you would want to be treated and not to trust strangers. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird I found several words of wisdom. First of all, as Calpurnia said, when you have company in your house, you shouldn't comment on their ways because you do not have the right to do so since you are not above them in any way. Additionally, some humerous words of wisdom were said by Miss Fisher when she told Burris to go home and wash his hair with lye soap and kerosone. Calpurnia's words of wisdom are still relevant today because when guests come to your house you have to treat them kindly and be polite to them.

Ever since I was young I can remember my parents telling me: “don’t touch fire”, don’t eat that”, and “you can’t fly”. One of the most important lessons my parents taught me was to never give up. You can never fail, if you always keep trying. These words of wisdom have impacted me in school, in sports, and even personal goals that I have set. This is the reason why I get good grades and other things because I never stop trying. My parent’s words of wisdom “always try and never give up no matter what obstacles come your way” is the most important lesson I’ve been taught and will help me to achieve all of my goals.

In the story To Kill a Mockingbird there are many life lessons that are still used by people today. For example on page 39 in the book Atticus tells Scout that “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around it”. While the phrase may have been changed to until you’ve walked around in his shoes, the meaning is still the same today. Until you have seen something from another person’s point of view you can’t understand it. Another example is on page 33. Calpurnia scolds Scout and says “don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo’comp’ny “. Today the phrase would be “treat others, the way you want to be treated” or the golden rule. Again the phrase has different words, but the same meaning; be nice to one another. All these phrases are still relevant and important today as they were back around the time To Kill a Mockingbird took place.

  17. My parents always tell me to treat others the way you want to be treated. I think its good advice because when you talk to somone you would expect the same respect back. During the first three chapters of to kill a mocking bird I found some relaed words, and they read.. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around it”. I think that those words mean that if you want to talk to someone, treat them with respect because you will never know how they accept it.

  18. There were many words of wisdom in the first three chapters of "To Kill a Mockingbird". I liked all of them but the one that really stood out to me most was not the longest quote but I thought it was the most affective. This was "there was no hurry..." (Lee 5). When I heard this is reminded me of my parents 100% because they always tell me don’t be in a rush, and take your time and do your best. This quote teaches me to not be in a rush to finish your homework or take a test because the outcome will most likely be negative. Although this quote was not the longest words of wisdom, the quote definitely spoke to me.

  19. My parents as well as my friends and the people around me give me many words of wisdom. Something they always tell me is to think outside of the box and be original. They tell me to be myself and not follow others. The quote in To Kill a Mockingbird on page 8 Scout Finch said "Do better if you go over it instead of under it". This is saying that you should go outside of your comfort zone and be original which is the words of wisdom I follow as should many others.

  20. In the first three chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird, the words of wisdom that stuck out to me were when Atticus said to Scout,”You never really understand a person until you look at things from their point of view. To me, these words are still relevant today. For example, if you somebody who is digging through a trash can and has really torn up clothes on, you think that it’s disgusting, but consider things from his or her point of view. That person is just trying to find something to keep them alive. They do not care if food comes from a trash can or from a sewer; they are just trying to stay alive. I never considered something like this in this manner until I read this quote from To Kill a Mockingbird. This book is full of words of wisdom and I have already learned a life lesson. I cannot wait to read more of To Kill a Mockingbird.

  21. If listened to and utilized correctly, words of wisdom can be very helpful and I have received a lot of them over the years. One that really sticks in out in my mind is, "quitters never win and winners never quit." This is something that is great to think about in sports and other areas where you compete in which it helps to encourage me to stick through hard times no matter how many adversities there may be. Moreover, the words of wisdom that I found in the first three chapters from To Kill a Mockingbird were on page 13 when Scout says that Accitus would tell Jem to "mind his own business and let the Radleys mind theirs…" when he asked about the strange and troubled neighbors living a few doors down. These words were good then and are still relevant today. It makes perfect sense not to intrude into someone else's issue if you have no right to be there. Acting in that way is rude and could embarrass someone. It also is pointless go through trouble and make a situation that you can easily avoid even worse.

  22. Throughout my life, my parents have always offered me the best advice. They told me to try your hardest no matter what. They said as long as you gave 100% effort, thats all that we can ask for. I honestly try to live by this. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, there was a lot of good advice given. The characters in the book seem very wise and knowledgeable. Some of the advice given, was similar to the advice my parents give me. In the book, Scout is told to go to school no matter what, and give it her all. She is told to keep her head up and just try her best when attending school. I honestly think this advice is something everyone should follow.

  23. Like Amy, I too grew up hearing the words "quitters never win and winners never quit" and to me they have meant the world. Usually those words were directed towards a sporting event, trying to get me to give it my all before the game or race was over, but they have also affected me in other situations. They have helped me to learn that if you quit during the struggle you won't ever finish, but if you Keep on fighting a little longer you will always win.
Some words of wisdom that I found in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' would be when Calpurnia mentions that everyone who sets foot in their house is their company. Even though it may seem like this was just referring to lunch with Walter, I think she was really trying to say that in her eyes everyone is equal. This is a very important life lesson because it makes you come across as a very accepting and humble person, rather than making it seem that you behold yourself to be higher than others, which is not a very good trait to have.

  24. One of the things my parents always told me was "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." Even though it can be hard, I try to live by these words. To Kill a Mockingbird seems to be filled with words of wisdom, even if the advice seems simple."I want you to go home and wash your hair with lye soap. When you've done that, treat your scalp with kerosene."This is a somewhat comical word of wisdom to Burris.

  25. I found many words of wisdom in the first three chapters that are relevent to modern day. The quote Atticus said to Scout "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."I agree with Kayla because it's true, you have absolutly no idea what's going on in someones life unless you are living it. You may hear something about someone but you won't understand or really know the story unless you're living it. That quote definitly is relevant to modern day events because things are still always going on wityh people (celebrities for example) but we have no idea what's going on unless we live it ourselves.

  26. Words of wisdom that my parents have given me over the years have been essential. Some of the most important words of wisdom were to do what you are told to the first time you are asked. These words of wisdom will lead me to being a responsible person, because I do what I am told to immediately. Especially in school, this can help me gain respect from teachers and my peers. I will always follow these words of wisdom for the rest of my life.

  27. My parents have always taught me to try really hard if I want something. I always listen to them because it helps me in life. Those type of things are what I try to live by. My favorie words of wisdom that I can relate to in the book are, when Atticus said, "you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." I think that Atticus was trying to say that you shouldn't judge a person because you don't know what they can be going through unless, you're in that person's place. You should always try to put yourself in their siduation and then maybe you'll understand what they go through.

  28. In the first three chapters of To Kill A Mocking Bird, Atticus's words of wisdom to Scout really stuck "You never really understand a person until you look at things from their point of view". I do think that this is still relevant today. This is almost like "living life in someone else's shoes" In which they both mean that not until you truly know what a person experiences and goes through you can't judge or understand them.

  29. My parents have always given me words of wisdom growing up. " You'll learn but you'll learn the hard way." They always say this to my two brothers and myself because know that we will learn as we grow up. It's up to us though how we learn. After reading the three chapters there were many words of wisdom also. "I want you to go home and wash your hair with lice soap. When you've done that, treat your scalp with kerosene." Burris gives this piece of wisdom, it seems very simple but sometimes the simplier the better.

My parents always tell me to try my hardest at everything and anything, and to treat others as you want to be treated. Also, to let people do as they please and to not judge them for what they do. In "To Kill A Mockingbird", Calpurnia tells Scout, "...That boy's yo' comp'ny and if he wants to eat up the table cloth you let him, you hear?" Cal teaches Scout a lesson about treating others and avoids possible conflict while eating dinner.

  31. Throughout my life, my parents have always given me great advice. One piece of advice my parents always say is to try your best and not to give up when things seems hard. This same advice was given in To Kill A Mockingbird when Atticus tells Scout to stay in school and not to give up from just the first day.

The most memorable words of wisdom that I have receieved from my parents are "treat others the way you want to be treated." Although it may sound simple I really follow these words of wisedom though out my life.
The words of wisedom I found in the book To Kill A Mockingbird was on page 39 in the book when Atticus said to Scout "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" This is still relevent today, because if you judge a person just because of the way they dress, look or act, it could not be their fault. You don't know what the person has gone through, so you shouldn't judge them, because you don't know what being them is like.

  33. Words of wisdom are very important in growing up. They can shape your morals and how you live your life. My parents have always told me to work hard and to treat people right. Hearing these words of wisdom has made me learn to follow them. Many people have taught me the words of wisdom that are to have fun doing what you do. If you are not having fun and enjoying yourself, you should change your habits; you can’t be miserable all your life. This message has taught me to look for the fun in things, even when they seem really tough. These words of wisdom have been very important to me.
The words of wisdom I found in To Kill a Mockingbird are definitely still relevant today. The most important one to me, was “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This means that you can’t judge people until you know what they really go through. This is very important to live by, because some people seem different then how they actually are, and we need to give them a chance. You don’t know what their lives are like from just looking at them.

  34. parents have always given given great advice through my years. the best advice they have given is probably that balance is the most important thing from work to play everything needs to be equal. As well an interesting piece from the novel is what attticuss says to jem, which is a persons business is their own. our society is so based on prying into others matters that this advice n keeping to your own matters should be taken to heart.

  35. Words of wisdom are important, especially to a teen or child. They help you do the right things or say the right things. My parents always tell me to do my best, not to 'sweat' the small stuff and to always walk in someone elses shoes to see how they would feel. They also tell me to have fun in life and make sure that everything isn't always, always about school becasue you have to have some fun; time to hang out with your friends, sports and other activities. In To Kill A Mockinbird, on page 30, Atticas says "You never really understand a person untill you consider things from his point of view- untill you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This piece of advice is still used today. In fact, my mom reminds me of this all the time. You really never know what a person is going through or why they choose one thing over another. In another words, you can't judge a book by its cover and you can't expect them to know everything you do. Furthermore, you can't expect them to see everything the same way you do either. Words or wisdom are very important to me and im sure are important to other people as well.

  36. My sister always tells me to not procrastinate. She says she is a procrastinator, and that there is loads of pressure on her. Also, my soccer coach is always saying not to do drugs, because he used to be a druggie, and is always saying never to start. He is a good man. In the book, on page 8,the quote that I liked was "Do better if you go over it instead of under it.", said by Scout. Now, I know it probably means nothing, but you can look at it different ways. I translated it into that sometimes, tasks have an easier and simpler way. Any task can have a shortcut.

  37. Words of wisdom are important no matter what age. They are most important to teens and children because they often remind them that "this is not the end of the world". I am always told "put a smile on your face, it'll help you get through the day" and in all honesty it is true. Not only is it true in school and on lousy days but also during sports. A team always plays better when they play with a smile. In To Kill A Mockingbird, some words of wisdom to live by would definitely be if something doesn't work, make a compromise and another would be, dont judge someone until you walk in their shoes. These words are used a lot now which shows how well they have worked. Sometimes, you just have to listen to what others say because they can help you out. Many people are reliant on words of wisdom to get them through the day, and personally, I feel as if hearing the right ones can make your day better.

  38. Some words of wisdom that my parents have given me are to live life to the fullest and treat people they way you want to be treated. I think both of those sayings are very important. What's life without having some fun every once and a while? If you don't live your life to the fullest you'll have regrets when you die. Treat others the way you want to be treated is very important because bullying has always been a problem in our society. If you don't want to be treated poorly, made fun of, or be called a bad name then why would you do it to someone else? Some words of wisdom said in the book were said by Atticus. He said, "you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-"…"-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This is very true. You can't judge a person by what they seem to be if you don't actually know what they've been through. Jean Louise didn't know that Miss Caroline didn't know about the Cunningham's. Because of Atticus's words of wisdom, Jean Louise gains respect for Miss Caroline and understands her mistake. Words of wisdom are very important to follow and try to accomplish.

My parents' words of wisdom are to treat people as you would want to be treated yourself. This helped me when I was in elementary school to know why it's not okay to steal and such. The words of wisdom that I liked in this book are " You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around it" .

  40. Some words of wisdom from my parents "Treat people the way you want to be treated." I always keep this in mind if someone is annoying me. Instead of yelling or saying mean or rude things to them, I say something in a nice way. The words of wisdom I liked best in the book so far were "Don't matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house's your company" I really love that quote. It is the opposite of prejudice and nonacceptance.
